The Author

Margaret Mitchell was born November 8, 1900. When she found herself bound to her home with a sprained ankle, she first started reading all the books in the local library. When she had read them all, her husband told her to write her own. She asked him what it should be about and he answerd, "write what you know". He bought her a typwrite and the next day she started on her book. She sold GWTW in 1935 and it was published on June 30, 1936. She died on August 16, 1949.

  • "Scarlett O'Hara" was originally called "Pansy O'Hara", but the publishers didn't like that name so Mitchell agreed to change it to Scarlett.

  • On the first day of publication, over 50,000 copies were sold.

  • Margaret Mitchell won a Pulitzer Prize in 1937 for "Gone With The Wind".

  • "Gone With The Wind" has sold more copies worldwide than any other book except the Bible.
